The solutions we'll discuss apply to different situations, i.e., whether you accidentally deleted the recovery partition or your hard drive crashed. Below is a brief description of each solution.

Method Effectiveness Difficulty
1️⃣Using Backtracker Moderate- allows you to create bootable media using Backtracker.  ⭐⭐
2️⃣Using ISO File Moderate- you create a new recovery partition from an ISO file.    ⭐⭐
3️⃣Using EaseUS Todo Backup High- allows you to create a recovery partition with several clicks.

Read on as we discuss each method in detail.

Method 1. Create a Bootable Media with Backtracker

Backtracker is a tool developed by ASUS manufacturers, and you can use it to back up an OS to a USB drive. However, you need to fulfill some conditions before applying this method. First, you must ensure that the recovery partition is not damaged, and 2) ensure that your default OS works correctly.

Additionally, you can only apply this method for ASUS computers running Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or later. Also, before you begin, you'll need a flash drive of at least 16 GB. Next, you can follow the steps below.

Step 1. Download and install Backtracker on your ASUS computer. Launch the application, then click on the "Get Started" button.

click Get Started

Step 2. Navigate to the "Backup and recovery image" section and click the Start button. Select your flash drive from the dropdown and click Next.

click Next

Step 3. Read through the requirements listed, and once you've fulfilled them, click on the Start button to initiate creating a bootable media.

Step 4. Stay patient until the above process is completed. Once done, you can use the bootable USB drive to fix your ASUS computer if your operating system fails.

Method 2. Create a New Recovery Partition with an ISO File

One of the requirements before using this method is to have an installation media. Also, you need to download the ISO file for your ASUS computer from the Microsoft website. Next, you can follow the steps below:

Step 1. Navigate to the ISO file and right-click on it. Select "Mount" from the dropdown to burn it to a selected DVD/USB recovery drive.

Step 2. Next, locate the install.esd or install.wim recovery partition files. Copy and paste this file to the C: root. If the file was a .wim, you can skip to Step 5. Otherwise, you can proceed to the step below to convert the .esd file to .wim.

Step 3. Launch Command Prompt as an administrator, then paste the following commands. Ensure you hit the Enter key after writing each command.

  • cd ..
  • cd ..
  • dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:install.esd
  • dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:1 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity

Step 4. Go to the ESD2WIM-WIM2ESD-v2 folder and right-click the ESD2WIM-WIM2ESD command. Next, select the option for "Run as administrator." Type the following list of commands and hit the Enter key after each to export the ESD index 1 file to WIM:

  • C: \install.esd
  • 1

Step 5. Go to Command Prompt, type the following list of commands, and hit Enter after each (this will make the install.wim files recognizable).

  • reagentc /setosimage /Path /Index
  • reagentc /info
  • exit

Step 6. You've now set the install.wim file as your recovery media. Note: You cannot use the "reagentc /setosimage /Path /Index"  command on Windows 10.

What Is ASUS Recovery Partition & Why Is It Not Working

ASUS Recovery Partition (also called ASUS Recovery Disk) is a hidden partition that stores the recovery image for your ASUS system. If you run into system errors, this partition is useful when you want to restore your ASUS computer's OS to its default settings.

Two ASUS recovery partitions exist: 1) Windows Recovery Partition and 2) OEM Recovery Partition. The former gets created while installing Windows, while the device manufacturers provide the latter. Sometimes, you may try accessing your recovery partition but find that it's not working and encounter the "recovery failed" error.

This could happen because of the following reasons:

  • The recovery partition doesn't exist because you accidentally deleted it.
  • You changed your computer's original hard drive.
  • The hard drive containing the recovery partition crashed.
