How to open or recover shortcut files on USB flash drive

"I have a flash drive and use it to save all of my favorite pictures and some important documents. But, this morning when I connected it to another computer, it was infected by a virus and suddenly all the files turned into shortcuts. This mishap has brought me a lot of stress and trouble. My files, images, and folders on my pen drive now just show up as shortcuts and are not accessible. I am wondering if it's possible to recover from these shortcut files from popping up and any method to retrieve my data. If there’s a possible solution, please let me know.

Now I’m extremely desperate because I have tried all the suggested methods, by unhiding the files, installing and running software to disable autorun, as well as antimalware. None of them worked! Please let me know if there is an effective way to recover my files that were infected by the shortcut virus."

A shortcut virus infected hard disk, flash drive, or pen drive can definitely create endless troubles. The names of the files might be altered by the virus and become shortcuts. This annoying issue makes it very difficult for people to open or view their files, even after eradicating the virus. But no worries. It is still possible for you to recover your virus infected files in two ways.

Solution 1. Recover shortcut files using CMD

If the flash drive is not formatted, the shortcut files should be stored in the hardware under a hidden mode. You can recover them by using CMD by following these steps:

1. Press Windows + R and type: cmd.
2. Type: chkdsk E: /f and hit Enter. (Replace E: with the drive letter of your device where you lost or deleted files.)
3. Type: Y and hit Enter.
4. Type: E: again and hit Enter. (Replace E: with the drive letter of your pen drive letter where you lost or deleted files.)
5. Type: attrib -h -r -s /s /d *.* and hit Enter.

Finish all these steps and you can check your files in on the pen drive. If you can't find the files you want, you can try another solution: recover shortcut files with EaseUS data recovery software.

Frequently Asked Qusetions

Windows · Mac
1. Why cannot I recover 2GB data for free?

It is recommended to check the version installed is Free or Trial because they are different versions.

Trial has data preview function but cannot save any files, while the Free version enables to recover 2 GB files. The default free space is 500 MB and you may share the product on social media to get another 1.5 GB.

2. Why cannot the recovered files be opened?

A file is saved as 2 parts on the storage device: directory info (which is comprised by file name, time stamp and size info, etc.) and data content.

If the files with original file names and folder structures cannot be opened, one possible reason is the corrupted directory info. There is still a chance to recover the data content with the RAW Recovery method in our software.

3. Why isn't it suggested to recover the files back to the original drive?

The storage structure of the lost files would be altered or damaged by any changes on the drive. If you save the recovered files back to the same drive, the original data structures and data content would be corrupted or overwritten, which causes permanent data loss. So you should prepare another disk to save the files.

4. How can I check whether my data is recoverable or not before purchase?

The Free version helps you save 2GB files to better verify the recovery quality of our product before purchase.

5. How long does it take to scan the drive?

It strongly depends on the capacity of your hard drive and the performance of your computer. As reference, most drive recoveries can be completed in around 10 to 12 hours for a 1-TB healthy hard drive in general conditions.

Put the lost files back into your hands in only 3 steps. Don't wait as your files won't.
