Should I Convert Drive From MBR to GPT to Use UEFI

I built a new computer with Intel 570 chipset and an I9 gen 11 processor. I installed my old graphics card. Everything worked well until I removed the old graphics card and tried the graphics built into the new processor. The old graphics card forced the bios into legacy mode, and the system was able to recognize my MBR drives. The system no longer worked with MBR drives when I removed the graphics card. Should I convert my M.2 system drive from MBR to GPT? And how can I do that? Can anyone help me?

According to your description, my answer is "Yes." You need to convert your M.2 system drive from MBR to GPT because the UEFI mode is now the latest boot mode that is compatible with more devices and systems. As your computer supports UEFI boot and your M.2 drive is a system drive; therefore it is necessary for you to convert your M.2 system drive from MBR to GPT.

So how can you convert your M.2 system drive from MBR to GPT? Here are some useful methods for you to follow.

The first method is to use the DiskPart. In this way, you will lose all your data on the drive. If you do not hope to lose all the data, it is suggested that you can read the second method. Here are some steps for you.

Step 1. Create a backup of the complete disk before opening DiskPart. It is essential as using DiskPart removes all data from the partition.

Step 2. Go to the Start menu and type cmd.

Step 3. Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

Step 4. Type diskpart and press Enter. If asked for permission, click on Yes.

Step 5. Enter the following commands and press Enter one by one:

  • list disk
  • select disk # (#means the disk number of your M.2 system drive)
  • clean
  • convert gpt

Step 6. It will delete all the partitions on the disk and then convert them to GPT.

Step 7. Type exit when the conversion process is complete.

The second method is to use the third-party tool: EaseUS Partition Master. It can help you achieve conversion from MBR to GPT without losing any data in an operable and simple way. If you do not consider yourself a pro-computer user, then this method is a good option for you to try.
