Can You Install a New Operating System (OS) on an Old Hard Drive?

I have used my Windows 10 computer for 6 consecutive years and want to install Windows 11 on the same drive. But can I install a new operating system on an old drive? And how can I install it?

Yes, you can install a new operating system (OS) on an old hard drive as long as the drive on your PC is compatible with the new OS.

Before installing the new OS, you should back up data in the drive and check the new OS's system requirements to ensure your computer complies with all necessary hardware and software specifications.

You usually need to boot the computer from bootable installation media, like a USB drive or DVD, to install a new OS on an old hard drive. The installation process will erase the old OS and install the new one. The hard disk will be erased throughout this process. Therefore, backing up any important files or data before beginning the installation is important.
