How Can I Recover Files from the SD Card for Free

I'm recording audio with an Olympus digital voice recorder. Unfortunately, I recorded the entire second half of the file accidentally. I'm hoping Olympus saved a temporary copy of the original file. To overwrite PARTS of a digital audio file, the Olympus voice recorder must be doing something rather clever! And weren't temporary files involved? Is there any way freeware/open-source way to recover all files on an SD card?
