Failed to Format Write-Protected NVMe Drive, Help

There is a problem with my Samsung 970 Evo NVMe hard drive. It shows that the hard drive is write-protected. I want to get some data out of it, so I was trying to format it so I could use it in another system, but I failed to achieve that. What can I do to fix this issue? Thank you in advance.

According to your description, I can know that your Samsung 970 Evo NVMe hard drive has been in a state of write protection. It means that you can not make any changes to the NVMe hard drive, such as any edition, deletion, addition, or even the format. Therefore, if you want to format it and use it in another system, you have to remove the write protection for your NVMe hard drive, and then you can format it.

Therefore, based on my experience, I would like to share some useful solutions with you to remove the write protection for your Samsung 970 Evo NVMe hard drive.

The first solution is to use Command Prompt to remove write protection. If you are familiar with cmd, you can follow the steps below:

Step 1. Press Windows + R simultaneously, type cmd and run the administrative Command Prompt.

Step 2. Type the following command lines and hit Enter after each command line.

  • diskpart
  • list disk
  • select disk # (# means the number of the write-protected NVMe hard drive)
  • attributes disk clear readonly

Step 3. Exit the Command Prompt.

However, if you are unfamiliar with cmd or think this method is a little complicated for you. There is another solution for you. That is to use a third-party software: EaseUS Partition Master. It can help you fix this issue in an easier and simpler way compared with the first method. Therefore, you can consider trying this software.
