Is System Unbootable After Cloning Disk with Clonezilla?

I cloned a 500GB SSD in my HP laptop using Clonezilla to a larger 1TB SSD via a USB adapter (both are NVME Gen 4). After cloning, my new cloned SSD cannot boot. Why did this happen? Please help me!

If your cloned SSD doesn't boot after cloning with Clonezilla, you might not set your cloned SSD as your first boot drive in your BIOS settings. The following are the detailed steps to set your cloned hard drive as the boot drive:

  • Press a specific key, usually Del or F2, to enter the BIOS settings.
  • Under the Boot tab, ensure the cloned SSD is set as the first boot device.

If your cloned hard drive is a GPT disk, ensure you enable the UEFI boot mode, and if it is an MBR one, set it to Legacy boot mode.

Here are some other potential reasons for your problems:

  • The source fs already has errors before cloning
  • The USB adapter is unreliable (most likely culprit)
  • Some kind of error occurred Clonezilla tells you on the message when cloning
  • A bad ram on your PC

If you have tried all the fixes and the issue is still here, it may be the problem in Clonezilla itself. In fact, Clonezilla is not the best software to clone a hard drive or migrate your OS from an HDD to an SSD.

When you use Clonezilla, you may get problems of one kind or another. For example, you may encounter the Clonezilla failed to clone bad sectors or cannot clone a smaller hard drive.
