To migrate Windows to a smaller SSD, you need to clone it. You will have to use third-party cloning tools like EaseUS Disk Copy or EaseUS Todo Backup, which is a key point to moving Windows to a new SSD drive without reinstalling or losing data.

It is worth noting that you must ensure that the new SSD can hold your data on your old hard drive. If your old 1TB drive has 700GB of storage space available and your new SSD is 500GB, you can perform disk cloning successfully. However, if your old hard drive has used space larger than 500GB, you cannot clone it to a 500GB SSD.

In that case, you can only migrate the system partition (C drive) to your new SSD. This can still make your new SSD C drive. Windows has many built-in tools, such as File History, Backup and Restore, and Windows backup app, to let you create a system image or back up your hard drive.

Unfortunately, it has no built-in cloning settings to help you clone a hard drive. In this end, you can turn to professional disk clone software, like EaseUS Disk Copy.

It is a dedicated disk cloning program for computers running Windows 11/10/8/7. It can help you transfer data from HDD to SSD and migrate Windows OS from HDD to HDD, HDD to SSD, and SSD to SSD. Furthermore, it lets you clone a hard disk with bad sectors on it and migrate data from one computer to another. Most importantly, it lets you clone HDD to SSD of different sizes easily and quickly.

You can migrate Windows 10 from a larger disk to a smaller SSD, but you need to ensure the SSD can hold your data on your old drive. You also need to find a reliable disk cloning tool like EaseUS Disk Copy to help you perform disk clone.
