Can Computers (Laptops Or Desktops) that Came With an HDD Be Upgraded To An SSD Or Vice Versa?

My HP laptop has been used for 5 years, and I want to upgrade it to a larger SSD. But the original disk is an HDD. Can I upgrade the HDD to an SSD, or vice versa?
