Method 2. Recover lost .xlsx/.xls from .tmp folder

Since due to Microsoft Office data security protection policy, Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, etc. are all added with an AutoRecovery feature. Once it's turned on, Microsoft Office will create a TEMP folder to save temporary excel or word files saved or unsaved.

So the .tmp folder is your second chance if you find nothing in the Recycle Bin. Here are the steps for you to follow and recover lost .xlsx or .xls files:

Step 1. Find the Excel temp files with .TMP extension of your lost files.

For Windows 10/8/8.1 users: C:\Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles

For Windows 7/XP users: C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\ 

Step 2. Find the temporary excel files which begin with "$" or "~" and end with ".TMP" extension.

Step 3. Copy these files and save to another secure location, changing the extension from ".TMP" to ".XLS" or ".XLSX".

Simple steps for Excel file recovery are as follows:

Step 1. Specify a location

Run EaseUS Data Recovery Software, firstly, you're asked to choose a location to start. Choose the drive X: or perhaps a specific folder on Desktop or somewhere else, and then click "Scan".
