🙋‍♂️"Hello everyone, I have an XPS 8900 with a 1 T hard drive that is maxed out, and I am getting a "Samsung - 860 QVO 2TB Internal SATA Solid State Drive" to replace it. I just want to clone my original SSD to the new one. Can someone put me on the right path to do this and the best way to do it? Also, would this go directly in, or will I need a mount adaptor for the new SSD?"

Dell XPS laptop is a premium line of portable computers known for their sleek design, high performance, and exceptional display quality. With powerful processors, ample storage options, and cutting-edge features, the XPS series(13/14/15/16/17) offers a top-of-the-line computing experience for both work and play. These laptops are equipped with stunning InfinityEdge displays, immersive sound systems, and long-lasting battery life, which are perfect for professionals, creatives, and gamers alike.

Cloning Dell XPS SSD is the easiest way to upgrade your laptop's SSD. This post outlines two ways to clone Dell XPS SSD, including using a professional SSD cloning tool and SupportAssist OS Recovery.

Preparation Before Cloning Dell XPS SSD

  • 1️⃣Choose a proper SSD that is compatible with your Dell XPS laptop.

First of all, you need a new SSD that is compatible with your Dell XPS laptop. This laptop supports M.2 2230 and M.2 2280 SSDs, and the primary types are 2.5 inches, M.2 SATA and NVMe, NVMe PCIe, and the U. 2 SSD. If you are unsure about it, check the SSD on your device.

Some of the popular choices include Samsung 990/980/970(pro) from 1TB to 4TB, Samsung 870 EVO from 250GB to 4 TB, WD Black SN850X from 500GB to 1TB, and Crucial P3/P5 with different capacities, etc. Ensure that the new SSD has a larger storage capacity than the old one.

  • 2️⃣Create a backup of your old SSD to avoid data loss during cloning.

Data loss may occur during the cloning process. To keep the safety of your data on old SSD, you should create a backup of it. EaseUS Todo Backup is a free tool that you can use to back up files and folders and even create a system image on the external hard drive, NAS, or cloud.

  • 3️⃣Prepare the necessary tools to open the laptop's back cover.

After cloning, you need to replace the old SSD with the new one; some of the necessary tools include Philip screwdrivers, a pry pick, etc.

  • 4️⃣Format new SSD(optional)

If the target SSD is new, you need to format the SSD for better performance. But if you choose to use EaseUS Disk Copy, you can eliminate this step because it will format SSD automatically during the cloning process and automatically monitor the target SSD's storage.

  • All data on the destination disk will be completely erased, so take care.

Step 1. To start copying/cloning an entire disk to another, choose this disk as the source disk under "Disk Mode" and click "Next".

  • "Copy as the source"does not change anything on destination disk and the layout is the same as source disk.
  • "Edit disk layout" allows you to manually resize/move partition layout on this destination disk.
