What Are MBR and GPT and How to Convert?

I want to upgrade my Windows system, but I can't. The system warned me that I'm using the MBR as my Windows disk, and the high-level Windows 11 only support the GPT partition table. I don't know the MBR and GPT and how to convert MBR to GPT. Any suggestions?

What Are MBR and GPT?

The first part contains everything you should know about MBR and GPT, including the definition, and disk capacity, available primary partition number.

MBR: A master boot record is a partition type containing OS and starts using BIOS boot mode. MBR has four primary partitions, limiting the maximum capacity space of the disk to 2TB.

GPT: The GUID Partition Table is a standard for the disk partition table and is booted by UEFI mode. GPT has more than four primary partitions; its minimum capacity space disk is 3TB.

How to Convert MBR to GPT?

We have offered two solutions for you to choose from. However, the best way I recommend you to use is EaseUS Partition Master, a powerful third-party software that can convert MBR to GPT without wiping data on your disk.

Here is how to do so:

Step 1. Use the download button to install EaseUS Partition Master on your computer.

Step 2. Open the software and go to the "Disk Converter" section, tick "Convert MBR to GPT," and click "Next."

Step 3. Choose the original MBR disk, and click "Convert" to operate.

Using the same steps, the Disk Converter tool also applies to convert GPT to MBR in Windows 11. Another way is to use Disk management. However, this will delete all your partitions, which requires you to back up the whole disk first.

Follow the specific steps to convert MBR to GPT:

Step 1. Right-click on "This PC" and find "Disk Management" under the "Manage" section.

Step 2. Right-click the volumes on your MBR disk and select "Delete Volume..."

Step 3. After your disk shows as unallocated space, right-click it and hit "Convert to GPT Disk."
