Sometimes when you start Microsoft Word, you might receive the error message saying that Cannot display the template add in template is not valid. Besides this one, there many other similar error messages. For example, run-time error, subscript out of range, module name cannot be found, etc. The reason why you would see this error message or similar messages is that an add-in in one of the startup folders is not compatible with Word.
Since the error message says the add in template is not valid, we must explain what is template in MS Word first before telling you how to solve the problem.
What is a Template in MS Word
A template is a document type that creates a copy of itself when you open it. You can use a template with predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles, instead of creating the structure of the Word document from scratch. You can even save a Word document as a template.
How to Solve Word Cannot Display the Template Add-In Template is Not Valid
To solve the problem, you need to identify the add-in that may be causing the behavior. Follow the detailed steps below and act now:
Step 1. Quit all Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Microsoft Outlook.
Step 2. Open the following folder. You need to open a different folder if you use a different version of Word.
- Word 2010: Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Startup
- Word 2007: Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Startup
- Word 2003: Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Startup
- Word 2002: Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup
- Word 2000: Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup
Step 3. Move any files that are located in that folder to your desktop.
Step 4. Open the following folder:
Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
Step 5. Move any files that are located in that folder to your desktop.
Step 6. Restart Word, if the problem goes away, move the files back, one at a time, re-starting Word after each one until you identify the one that is causing the problem.
After you have found the one that is causing the problem, what to do with it depends on what it is and how much you need it.
Some users may receive an error message saying that the Command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Here we will tell you how to turn off the dialog box in Word.
Bonus Tip: What If Your Word File is Corrupted
In addition to the error messages we mentioned above, another situation that many users may encounter is file corruption. If your Word document got damaged, you can't access it, and you will lose all the content in it.
File corruption happens in many scenarios, OS crash, virus attack, and computer sudden shutdown. In most cases, you don't have a backup of the corrupted file, that's why you need a data recovery tool to help.
One such tool we want to recommend is EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. It has entered the field of data recovery for about 17 years, being both experienced and trustworthy.
