How to Restore Data and Files from Old IDE Hard Drive

I have an old IDE hard disk from my old pc which is now dead. I recently purchased a brand new laptop running Windows 7. I bought an IDE to USB converter on eBay, and when I connect it in, I obtain the available space of 2.5gb with the help of recovery software. when my hard disk has at least 20GB of free space and a total capacity of 80 GB. why is it appearing as so less free space? How can I recover my photos because I don't have any software?

You can employ a software tool to recover data from a dead hard drive. It appears that a partition on the drive has failed. There is a multitude of methods out there that can help you recover files from bad sectors and bad partitions. You can format the entire drive if you don't care about the data.

To troubleshoot the IDE hard drive, you can:

  • Ensure both drives aren't configured for the same setting, master or slave.
  • Check that the power is turned on and that everything is securely linked.
  • Check that the drive is enabled in the system BIOS. If this is not the case, choose auto-detect.
  • Check that the IDE cable is properly attached.

You'll notice a stripe running down the side of the cable that indicates pin 1. Pin 1 is usually the one nearest to the power connector. If you have this reversed, the drive will either be silent or fail to turn on.

The formatted space of the old IDE hard drive will always be slightly less than the specified storage capacity. Don't be concerned; this is normal. There is a distinction between how the operating system and the manufacturers measure drive size. Hard drive manufacturers employ round numbers for scaling, although operating systems display the actual version.
