I Bought a Faster SSD, Should I Migrate My Windows to It?

Hello all. OS is currently installed on a 500gb 850 evo (I also have a 2 TB HDD). I just bought a 970 evo plus 2 TB. Should I migrate (uninstall and reinstall) Windows on the 970? Or it won't make a meaningful difference?

According to my experience, the answer is Yes. The 850 EVO is a SATA drive limited by the max bandwidth of the SATA interface. The 970 EVO Plus is relatively faster than it and has outstanding performance. So I prefer to use 970 evo plus for Windows without a doubt. Follow the complete procedure to transfer Windows.

Pre-procedure: Clean up the system disk

To avoid data loss and boot issues, you have to check the capacity of the SSD and ensure it exceeds the used space on your hard drive. For example, if the used space on your drive is 181.5 GB, your SSD should be at least 182 GB. If not, free up the hard drive space by transferring essential files to another drive and deleting unused programs.

Mid-procedure: Transfer Windows to SSD

Select a fast and safe OS transfer software that can help you migrate Windows to SSD effortlessly. EaseUS Partition Master can fulfill your demands on transferring almost every version of the Windows system to SSD with a few clicks.

Step 2. Use the "Migrate OS" feature to choose the source and target disk, then click "Next."

Step 3. If there is a warning message, confirm it by clicking "Yes," previewing your target disk's layout and customizing it according to your wants.

Step 4. Click "Start" to transfer Windows 8 to the prepared disk.

Post-procedure: Make the SSD bootable

Lastly, you need to set the installed SSD as a boot drive of your computer in the BIOS setup:

  • Reboot your computer and long-press the "F2" key to enter BIOS settings. (If F2 does not work for your computer, try keys like ESC, DEL, and F12.)
  • Change the boot drive to the SSD under the "Boot" part.
  • Apply the changes and quit.
