As for how to check what SSD I have in Windows and Mac:

  • For Windows, use System Information, Device Manager, Disk Management, and Windows PowerShell.
  • For Mac, see the specifications in Storage.

See how to check what brand SSD I have in Windows 11/10 step-by-step.

1. System Information

Step 1. Press the Win + R keys together to launch the Run dialogue box.

Step 2. Type msinfo32 in the field and hit Enter. You will see the System Information window.

Step 3. Double-click Components > Storage. Then click Disks. You will see detailed information about your solid-state drive, including its manufacturer, model, bytes, size, partitions, and so on.

2. Device Manager

Step 1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager from the list. The Device Manager window will open.

Step 2. In the window, go to find Disk drives and click the drop-down menu to extend it. You can see the model name of your laptop or PC's SSD.

Step 3. To see more info, right-click on the SSD model name and choose Properties. You will find more details here.

3. Disk Management

Step 1. Right-click the Start button and select Disk Management (DM) from the list. This will launch the DM window.

Step 2. Right-click the disk (not the partition) and select Properties. This will open the same window as Device Manager. You can switch between tabs to check SSD or HDD on your laptop or desktop.

4. Windows PowerShell

Step 1. Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) for Windows 11 or Windows PowerShell (Admin) for Windows 10. This will launch a window.

Step 2. Type the command: Get-PhysicalDisk | Format-Table -AutoSize. Hit Enter. You can see the serial number, media type, usage, size, and other specifications of the hard drives in your Windows PCs.

⭐Note: You can also run the Command Prompt as an administrator and type wmic diskdrive get model, serial number, status. This will list the same information as the PowerShell.

So, how to tell if the external hard drive is SSD or HDD on Mac?

Step 1. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > System Report.

Step 2. Under the Hardware section, select Storage.

Step 3. Select Macintosh HD from the Volume Name list.

Step 4. From the Medium Type, you can check if your hard drive is SSD or HHD. You can also find more info here.

After checking SSD capacity, partition size, and more details, are you preparing to transfer Windows from SSD to M.2 or NVME? Doing this can boost your computer performance and give you faster read & write speed.
