Does Windows 8.1 Have a Backup Utility?

My Lenovo laptop is running Windows 8.1. Recently, the screen will suddenly go black from time to time and then recover immediately. I guess it's because of the old system. So need to backup my laptop just in case. I don't know if my computer has a built in tool for this. Do you have any ideas? How do you back up data on Windows 8.1 PCs?

Yes, File History is a built-in backup feature included with Windows 8.1 systems. It is a backup feature introduced in Windows 8 that is now accessible in Windows 8.1 and later system versions.

File History is a free backup software that can automatically back up files to external hard drives and network destinations. Photos, videos, music files, documents, desktop folders, and other items are among the backup sources.

You can get access to it with the path: Control Panel > System and Security > File History.

There are numerous benefits to using File History. You may use this program without any technical knowledge because it has an intuitive and simple user interface. It also works perfectly with Windows 10 and Windows 11, allowing you to access your backup files from the new operating system without having to reinstall any software. Furthermore, it provides various configurable backup settings, allowing you to customize your backup frequency and location. As a result, File History is an ideal tool for making a backup of crucial files saved on your Windows 8.1 computer.

File History, on the other hand, has limits. The most evident is that by default, it simply backs up your stuff from your user account. Another disadvantage is the backup types. It will copy and store original files, which is really space-consuming.

If you want a more comprehensive backup solution, you could use free third-party software such as EaseUS Todo Backup. It is a better alternative to File History and has more functionality. It ensures that you backup the entire Windows system, i.e. build a system image. Furthermore, it provides numerous backup choices, such as encrypted and compressed backup, to assure security and conserve space.
