You can install your old SSD in a newly built PC if the solid-state drive meets the new computer's hardware requirements. Check if the following conditions are met:

  • The new computer should support the type of SSD you have, such as SATA, M.2, and PCIe. Check the specifications of your new computer's motherboard for compatibility.
  • Change the boot order in the BIOS/UEFI settings to boot from the old SSD if you plan to use the operating system on the used SSD.
  • You may need to reinstall or repair the OS after moving the SSD if the installed operating system on your old SSD has caused driver issues due to different hardware configurations.
  • Prepare a screwdriver to install the SSD into the new computer physically.
  • Back up files you need before moving SSD in case of any issues during the transition.

If the old SSD can match the hardware of the new PC, install it on the new laptop or desktop. Give the reused SSD a boot priority if you need to use it as the boot drive.

What if the Windows SSD has dissimilar hardware? Don't worry. You still have an option: clone old SSD to new SSD without losing data and OS reinstallation. Prepare a qualified hard drive and download the EaseUS Disk Copy.

Give the cloned drive boot priority if you plan to use it as the boot drive; just install it on your new PC if you are prepared to use it as the storage drive.
