How to Combine Two Primary Partitions Together Without Losing Data

Posted on Jan 15, 2018 by Daisy to Partition Master

EaseUS Partition Master allows to combine/merge two primary partitions (including discontinuous primary partitions) into one without losing data. It works on GPT disk and MBR disk, supports OS: Windows 10/8.1/8/7/XP/Vista.

"The system partition is almost running out of space, and I decide to merge it with D: which holds plenty of free space (C;and D: are primary partitions). Remember that I don't intend to clear up D drive. Windows disk management won't allow me to directly combine two primary partitions together. The only way to increase C drive space is to decrease D drive to get free unallocated space, and then add the space to C. As such, I still keep C: and D:, but one becomes larger while the other smaller. Is it possible to just have one primary partition that contains both information of C: and D:?"

About Primary Partition

On MBR disk, you can create no more than 4 primary partitions, which can be used to install Windows operating system, and only one primary partition can be set as active to boot the operating system. Usually, C drive is what's set as active to take the responsibility. It does not mean that you can only have 4 partitions on a hard drive, actually, you can have as many as you want. When partition a hard drive, set 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition. On the extended partition, you're able to create multiple logical partitions, just for use of storing personal data and files.

Partitioning hard drive into several chunks, as we call partitions or volumes, does some good in terms of computer information organizing and managing. However, according to different demands on different partitions, space may not be allotted ideally and we may run into issues like c drive is out of space while others still have large space left. At this moment, some would like to resize partitions, while some choose to reduce one partition by combining it with the other requiring a certain amount of space.
