How to Clone Only Used Space in HDD Partition

Updated on Jan 19, 2018 by Daisy to Partition Master

How can I clone only used space in HDD partition to SSD? Is it possible to clone a larger HDD to a smaller SSD? This page delivers the most viable solutions to transfer only the used portion of data in HDD to the other place with ease.

"Hi there, is it possible for me to clone only the used space in HDD partition with a large capacity to a smaller SSD? Here is my case. I have a 2TB HDD installed on my computer which has been used about 370GB, and I want to replace the large drive with a 500GB Samsung SSD. I've searched on forums, saying that it's impossible to clone a larger HDD to a smaller SSD. I came up with an idea. Can I just shrink the HDD to the size of the used space, and then do the cloning work?"

Ever since solid state drives become increasingly popular, it's common for people to purchase one to replace their old hard drive. There are many advantages to use SSD over HDD. For example, an SSD enables a faster access speed so that programs can run more quickly especially when they access large amounts of data like your operating system; also with no moving parts, SSD generates no noise. However, generally, SSD carries a smaller capacity than that of HDD but charges higher. For average computer users, over 512GB SSD is always beyond their price range, that's why most people are confronted with the same difficult situation of not knowing how to clone a large HDD with only the used space to a small SSD due to the following requirement.

Disk clone requirement

Cloning from one drive to another has to meet one requirement. The destination disk has to be the same size as the source disk or larger, otherwise, you cannot even start the first step. You may attempt to decrease the HDD to the same size of the used space, however, it's risky and can be counterproductive which will absolutely slow down access time.

5. Resize partitions on the destination disk. On a disk map, the current size of the partitions on the destination Disk is displayed on the top of the dialog box. Position the mouse pointer on the left or right partition handle; the mouse pointer changes to a double-headed arrow. Then you only need to drag the handle to the partition size as you want. Click OK.
