AirDrop for Mac OS and iOS enables wireless data exchange between Apple devices. If there is a partner nearby, simply click or tap on the AirDrop symbol and file sharing can begin. The data transfer works via the WLAN or Bluetooth. For the connection to work, the devices must not be more than ten meters apart. AirDrop is not a replacement for a conventional network connection, but an addition. If both devices are in the same WLAN, the data traffic is routed via the router. Data transmission is encrypted for security reasons.

How to use AirDrop with the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

To use AirDrop on Apple mobile devices, you not only need at least iOS 7 and a compatible device, but also an iCloud account. In addition, switch on the WLAN connection and Bluetooth:

  • 1. Place your finger at the bottom edge of the display and drag it up to open the Control Center.
  • 2. Tap "AirDrop" below and select one of the three options. You can enable or disable the service by selecting "Anybody" or "Receive off". You can also use the "Contacts only" option to restrict the number of active partners.
  • 3. If you have activated AirDrop, tap "Send" or the Share button within an app such as Safari, Photos, Contacts or Passbook. This consists of an arrow in a square.
  • 4. Your device will then search for available devices with AirDrop in the area. If a Mac or iOS device is available, you can select it above.
  • 5. The other user receives a notification of which data you want to transfer. He can refuse or accept them. Once the file has been transferred, it is automatically opened on the other device.
