If you are using an iPhone, it is important to regularly backup iPhone contacts due to a number of reasons. Performing this task keeps your contacts safe even if you get your iPhone broken, lost, or stolen. So here comes the question, how to backup contacts on iPhone 6/6 plus/7/8/X?

In the past, if you had an iPhone or other iOS device and you wanted to backup important data like notes, SMS, calendars and contacts you needed to either jailbreak your devices or use special tools to do this for you. And even then, the result was usually a series of files with strange name extensions that hardly any non-tech user would be able to recognize.

Thanks to iCloud since iOS 5, Apple's web-based data backup service, backing up data, like contacts, across multiple computers and devices is easy. With iCloud enabled on your devices, each time you're connected to the internet and make changes to the Contacts apps, those changes will automatically be uploaded to your iCloud account and then synced to all your compatible devices. If you want to restore the backups, just go to the iCloud Control Panel and download backup file from iCloud directly.

How to Enable iCloud Backup to Backup Contacts with iCloud

What You Need to Use iCloud

1.An Apple ID/iTunes account. Your iCloud account will use the same username and password.

2.A Mac running OS X 10.7.5 or higher, or a PC running Windows Vista or 7 or higher and iCloud Control Panel.

3.An iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5 or higher, and the latest iTunes. Backup Contacts to iCloud Step 1: Tap the Settings app Step 2: Tap iCloud Step 3: If you're not signed in, tap the Account field and sign in with your Apple ID/iTunes account.

Step 4: Switch to turn on the On/green button beside Contacts icon. That's it. Your contacts have been synced to iCloud, including all the changes you'll make since then. Syncing iPhone contacts to iCloud, this means all your iPhone contacts will be backed up to the iCloud server, and all the contacts on your different devices logged in same Apple ID will be merged in iCloud, and synced to all your iDevice. Therefore, if you want to keep your contacts independent, and don't merge with other iDevices's, you need to log in a different Apple ID on your iPhone, or move to third-party iPhone data transfer software.
