When you set up iCloud, you will automatically receive 5 GB of free disk space. You can use this memory for your iCloud backups, or to keep your photos and videos stored in the iCloud Photo Library and your documents in iCloud Drive up to date. If you need more space, you must buy additional iCloud storage space.

If your iCloud storage is full, your device will not back up any more data to iCloud. New photos and videos are no longer uploaded to iCloud's photo library, and you can no longer send or receive messages with your iCloud email address. When this happens, you can clean up iCloud storage to free up more iCloud storage.

Clean up iCloud storage by deleting photos and videos in photo library

The iCloud photo library uses your iCloud storage space to keep all your photos and videos on your devices up to date. You can make room in iCloud by deleting some photos and videos you no longer need from the Photos on your iOS devices.

Alternatively, you can also save some storage space by activating the "Optimize memory" option in the settings. Then, the Photos app automatically replaces photos and videos with smaller, more customized versions when more storage space is needed. The original photos and videos remain in their original size and resolution in iCloud and can be reloaded at any time.

  • Open the Photos and tap Photos at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Select and select one or more photos or videos to delete.
  • Tap Trashcan icon, and then tap Delete Photo.

Clean up iCloud storage by transferring files from iPhone to computer

Rather than deleting the large photos and videos on your iPhone to manage your iPhone storage, you can choose another easier and safer way, that is to transfer files from iPhone to PC. EaseUS MobiMover is a free iPhone data transfer and content manager. You can export all your iPhone data like photos, videos, contacts or notes to a PC as a backup copy, so that your iCloud doesn't have to back up so many large files, while you get to keep all the files safe and sound.
