What Apples AirDrop can do

AirDrop first appeared under Mac OS 10.7 "Lion". As of iOS 7, the service is also available on Apple mobile devices:

Function: With AirDrop, you can exchange data such as images or Word documents between your Apple devices. Mac, MacBook, iPhone and iPod touch can exchange different files with each other. The connection is made via Bluetooth and WLAN. It's fast and costs nothing.

Condition: AirDrop is only supported by certain devices. OS-X devices: MacBook and MacBook Pro from 2008, MacBook Air from 2010, iMac from 2009 and Mac mini and Mac Pro from 2010. iOS devices: from iPhone 5, iPad from the 4th generation, iPad mini and iPod touch 5th generation.

Method: The service uses Bluetooth to detect a device with the AirDrop function switched on. In a public WLAN, the number of possible hits would simply be too high. However, WLAN is used for the faster connection to transfer data afterward.

Share data: Under OS X, you can share any files. To do this, you have to connect to the desired person in the Finder on the left under "AirDrop" and then put the files in the folder. As of iOS 7, you can share content that can also be sent by e-mail - for example, images or links to websites. Click on the Share button and select the option AirDrop.

How to use AirDrop on your iPhone under iOS 11

To use AirDrop on Apple mobile devices, you not only need at least iOS 7 and a compatible device, but also an iCloud account. In addition, switch on the WLAN connection and Bluetooth:

  • 1. Place your finger at the bottom edge of the display and drag it up to open the Control Center.
  • 2. Tap "AirDrop" below and select one of the three options. You can enable or disable the service by selecting "Anybody" or "Receive off". You can also use the "Contacts only" option to restrict the number of active partners.
  • 3. If you have activated AirDrop, tap "Send" or the Share button within an app such as Safari, Photos, Contacts or Passbook. This consists of an arrow in a square.
  • 4. Your device will then search for available devices with AirDrop in the area. If a Mac or iOS device is available, you can select it above.
  • 5. The other user receives a notification of which data you want to transfer. He can refuse or accept them. Once the file has been transferred, it is automatically opened on the other device.

Quite easy, isn't it? However, what if you use a Windows PC with an iPhone? What if you are using iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s that Airdrop doesn't support? And what if you have iPhone 6 but the iPad is the first generation? Yes, in these situations, AirDrop cannot help you to transfer files. So the question is: Are there any AirDrop alternatives that can do what AirDrop cannot do? I will introduce one free iPhone data transfer – EaseUS MobiMover. This tool can be used to transfer photos, music, videos, contacts, text messages, movies, audiobooks, TV shows, iTunes U, etc. from iPhone, iPad, and iPod to your Windows PC in one click.
