Fixes to Night Shift Not Working in iOS 11

Tip 1: Check whether Night Shift is available on your iPhone/iPad

Night Shift not showing on your iPhone/iPad? As you may know, Night Shift Mode is not available on all iPhone and iPad. According to Apple, you can find Night Shift on:

  • iPhone 5s or later
  • iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation), iPad Air or later, iPad mini 2 or later
  • iPod Touch (5th generation)

Thus if you don't see Night Shift on your device, you can first check whether your iPhone/iPad is on the list of the supported devices. To check your iPhone/iPad model, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, click the name of your device and then you can see your iPhone model under Device Info.

Tip 2: Locate Night Shift correctly

Night Shift not in Control Center on your iPhone? If you are using an iPhone or iPad on which Night Shift is available, you can access the feature in Control Center or in Settings App.

How to turn on Night Shift in Control Center in iOS 11:

Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone/iPad screen to open Control Center. (On iPhone X, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to open Control Center.)

Step 2: Press deeply on the Brightness control icon (the sun icon) and tap on the Night Shift icon to turn it on or off. (It's likely that you can't find Night Shift in Control Center because you don't recognize the icon. )

How to enable Night Shift in Settings in iOS 11:

Step 1: Open Settings App on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2: Go to Display & Brightness and click Night Shift.

Step 3: Toggle on the button next to Scheduled and adjust the color temperature if you need.

Tip 3: Check your Night Shift settings

Night Shift not working as you expect? By default, Night Shift turns on from sunset to sunrise. If you want to activate this feature out of the time period, you need to go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift > Schedule to customize the schedule.

Tip 4: Check your iPhone/iPad settings

According to Apple, Night Shift might be turned off when some display accessibility settings are on. These settings include Invert Colors, Grayscale, and Increase Contrast. For example, if you have turned on invert colors on your iPhone, you may fail to activate Night Shift as you wish. Thus when Night Shift is not working in iOS 11 on your iPhone or iPad, you can check whether you have enabled these features on your device that prevent Night Shift from working. Follow the steps below to check the settings.

To check Invert Color and Grayscale settings:

Step 1: Open Settings App on your iPhone/iPad in iOS 11.

Step 2: Go to General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.

Step 3: Then you can see whether you have turned on Invert Colors directly. If Color Filters is off, Grayscale is disabled. While if it's on, click the option to see whether Grayscale is selected.

To check Increase Contrast settings:

Step 1: Go to Settings App on your device.

Step 2: Click General and choose Accessibility.

Step 3: Scroll down to tap on Increase Contrast and then you can see the related settings.

If one or more of the three features is enabled, that's might be the very cause of the "Night Shift not working" issue in iOS 11. If you still want to switch on Night Shift, you can simply disable these display accessibility settings and then follow the steps in Tip 2 to turn on Night Shift.
