Updated on Apr 09, 2019 by Jean to Disk/Partition Clone

This device cannot start. (Code 10) is one of the most common hardware error in Device Manager in Windows 10/8/7. Here, we will show you the best fixes which is applicable to most storage devices like external hard drive and other USB mass storage media devices.

The full error message displays itself like this:

"This device cannot start. Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. (Code 10)"

What does error code 10 imply in Device Manager

Code 10 is one of the most common error codes in Device Manager. And according to the error message, the code 10 seems to be a driver issue. On the page of Microsoft Support, it details the cause of "this device cannot start. (Code 10)" as follows.

"Typically, the device's hardware key contains a "FailReasonString" value, and the value string displays an error message defined by the hardware manufacturer. If the hardware key does not contain a “FailReasonString” value the message above is displayed."

And it provides code 10 victims with recommended resolutions: update the driver.

1_ In the Device Manager, double-click the device (where there is usually a yellow triangle exclamation icon beside it) and open the driver Properties window.
2_ Go to the Driver tab and click Update Driver.
3_ Click Search automatically for updated driver software.

An extra tip for you:

In case you'll be prompted to provide the path of the driver, take it easy, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor's website.

What else could you do to fix the code 10 error

At times, updating driver literally doesn't help remove the error. What's the matter?

In the first place, the Code 10 error is generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device because of outdated or corrupted drivers, but it can also occur due to some kind of unspecified driver or hardware problems, mostly on a USB and audio device.

For example, system errors or simply it's simply a problem of the hardware device itself.

It's high time that the hard drive should be replaced!

Excluding the system related issues that cause the Device Manager cannot start the device and send the code 10 error (which you could try to install the latest Windows service patch or go to the previous version of Windows), it's largely because your hardware fails in working properly. It's failing.

But installing new hard drive sounds costly, especially if it has the system on it. Is there any way to upgrade the hard drive without reinstalling the system on it? Additionally, no data and applications loss. The only solution is to copy the disk by using EaseUS Disk Copy!

Prior Notice:

  • The "Sector by sector copy" asks the size of your destination disk to be at least equal to or larger than that of the source disk. Leave this feature unchecked if you wish to clone a larger hard disk to a smaller hard disk.
  • All data on the destination disk will be completely erased, so take care.

Step 1. To start copying/cloning an entire disk to another, choose this disk as the source disk under "Disk Mode" and click "Next".

select the source disk and click next

Step 2. Choose the other disk as the destination disk.

A message now appears, warning you that data will be lost. Please confirm this message by clicking "OK" and then click "Next".

Step 3. Check the disk layout of the two disks. You can manage the disk layout of the destination disk by selecting "Autofit the disk", "Copy as the cource" or "Edit disk layout".

check the diak layout
  • "Autofit the disk" makes some changes by default on the destination disk layout so that it can work at its best status.
  • "Copy as the source"does not change anything on destination disk and the layout is same as source disk.
  • "Edit disk layout" allows you to manually resize/move partition layout on this destination disk.

Tick the "Check the option if the target is SSD" option to put your SSD in its best performance.

Step 4. Click "Proceed" to officially execute the task.
