Information Update: EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard has released the new version, with its user-interface greatly improved. Refer to the matched user guide in the below part.

Why format hard drive

Format commands are typically run to prepare a new logical drive for use - enabling the installation of an operating system, programs, and user data. The format command has been around for a long time, formerly there were stand-alone DOS format programs before being integrated into Windows.

When you format a disk, the operating system erases all bookkeeping information on the disk, tests the disk to make sure all sectors are reliable, marks bad sectors, and creates internal address tables that will be used later to locate information. In a word, you need to format a disk before you can use it

In fact, hard disk formatting does not occur alone to a new drive. it happens all the time in our daily computer life. For example:

  • Hard drive itself develops problems: long-term use of a drive could become slow, inaccessible, crash a lot, etc.
  • File system requirements: different operating systems require different file systems, so perhaps you need to convert NTFS to FAT.
  • Human errors: Just hit the wrong button and accidentally formatted the drive.

How to recover data from a formatted hard drive

All the above manners would erase data completely from the hard drive. What if the data is unintentionally lost by formatting? Is it possible to recover data from a formatted hard drive? Yes, as long as you find a reliable hard drive recovery program.

For your information, formatting a disk does not erase the real data. All the erased data doesn't disappear from the hard drive until fresh data is written to the space, where marks as 'delete'. When you accidentally or intentionally format a drive in Windows Explorer, Windows Disk Management or Command Prompt DiskPart before creating a backup, take it easy, EaseUS data recovery software comes in handy.

With consistent data recovery research and development, EaseUS data recovery software has been helping worldwide users with deleted, formatted, and inaccessible data recovery for over 10 years. It's acknowledged to be the top-notch data recovery program, regarding ease of use, deep scan speed, 99%+ data recovery success rate and prompt customer support.

Bonus tip - how to ensure a 100% data recovery on a formatted hard drive

As clearly explained before, formatting only clears data on the address tables, and data finally disappears once you write new data to the marked space. So, stop using the hard drive to store new data, and that's the key to use software to recover as much data as possible after format.

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is capable and powerful in retrieving lost data, indeed, but with preconditions. The sooner you perform the recovery, the higher chance you could get back most data. Compared with the recovery method, what's the 100% working way to protect data? Apparently, a regular hard drive backup.

Doing a backup of data can be easy, like the 'copy and paste' way. But for large hard drive backup, do it automatically and intelligently. Choose EaseUS free backup software to create a hard drive backup. It's easy, fast and convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why choose EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard?

"EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is the best we've seen. It's far from perfect, partly because today's advanced disk technology makes data-recovery more difficult than it was with the simpler technology of the past, but it's fast and efficient..."PCMag

"The first thing you'll notice about EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Pro is that its interface is very clear and uncluttered, with only a small collection of self-explanatory controls. You won't find lots of extra options hidden in a system of hidden menus, either; what you see really is what you get."techradar

"Recover lost files, even after deleting a partition or formatting your drive."Macworld

2. Why cannot I recover 2GB data for free?

It is recommended to check the version installed is Free or Trial because they are different versions.

Trial has data preview function but cannot save any files, while the Free version enables to recover 2 GB files. The default free space is 500 MB and you may share the product on social media to get another 1.5 GB.

3. Why cannot the recovered files be opened?

A file is saved as 2 parts on the storage device: directory info (which is comprised by file name, time stamp and size info, etc.) and data content.

If the files with original file names and folder structures cannot be opened, one possible reason is the corrupted directory info. There is still a chance to recover the data content with the RAW Recovery method in our software.

4. Why isn't it suggested to recover the files back to the original drive?

The storage structure of the lost files would be altered or damaged by any changes on the drive. If you save the recovered files back to the same drive, the original data structures and data content would be corrupted or overwritten, which causes permanent data loss. So you should prepare another disk to save the files.

5. How can I check whether my data is recoverable or not before purchase?

The Free version helps you save 2GB files to better verify the recovery quality of our product before purchase.

6. How long does it take to scan the drive?

It strongly depends on the capacity of your hard drive and the performance of your computer. As reference, most drive recoveries can be completed in around 10 to 12 hours for a 1-TB healthy hard drive in general conditions.
