HP Recovery Manager is a general utility tool with various different functions. In this section, we will list several examples of its features below:

Step 5. Click Install to start the installation process.

Step 6. There will be a message after the installation process is completed. Close all open applications and then restart your computer.

Performing a system recovery

With HP Recovery Manager, you can reinstall or restore the system to an earlier state. You should note the following list before proceeding:

  1. 1. All personal files should be backed up before starting system recovery. Any data not backed up will be lost.
  2. 2. The process can take several hours. During this time, the system should not be connected to the internet. You cannot turn off the computer or interrupt the recovery process.

You may see two or three options for system recovery as following. You should pick the type that can help fix your problem while making as least change to the system as possible.

  1. 1. System Recovery: The system drive will be formatted. The operating system along with drivers and software will be reinstalled.
  2. 2. Factory Reset: This option will format the entire hard drive on your system and reinstall the drivers. It will also create the Recovery Partition along with other set partitions.

Refreshing your PC without affecting your files

If you don't want to remove files from the computer, you can refresh it using HP Recovery Manager and keep all your personal data.

Step 1. Disconnect all external drives from the computer and restart.

Step 2. Open HP Recovery Manager, provide administrator confirmation if needed.

Step 3. Under Help, select "Windows System Reset".

Step 4. Select Troubleshoot, then Recovery manager.

Step 5. Click Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next.

Step 6. Proceed with on-screen instructions.

Creating Recovery Media

You can create a recovery media which you can boot to perform a system restore or factory reset. However, you can only create one set of media for each computer. You can choose to create the media like a USB flash drive or a DVD. In this section, we will be using a flash drive.

Step 1. Click Create recovery media.

Create recovery media

Step 2. There will be a warning prompt. Click I Accept and confirm.

Step 3. Connect your USB flash drive to the computer, Note that the flash drive must have sufficient storage capacity and should be more than listed as the size of the recovery media. If your flash drive is larger than 32 GB, the extra size may not be usable after creating the recovery media. All data saved on the flash drive will also be lost.

Step 4. Once you have created the recovery media, safely eject the USB flash drive and store it in a safe location.

With the recovery media, you can perform a factory reset and system recovery as needed by restarting your computer and booting with the USB flash drive. If done correctly, you will boot directly into Recovery Manager.

Step 1. When prompted, select Run program from media, click Next.

Run program from media

Step 2. Select System Recovery or Factory Reset as desired.

Step 3. You can perform data backup before proceeding if needed.

Step 4. Follow the on-screen instructions until finished.

Recovery When Windows 10 Does Not Start Correctly

If Windows 10 fails to start, you can still use Recovery Manager to perform a system recovery. This process uses the recovery partition on your drive. If the partition is damaged, this method will not work and you will need recovery media instead.

Step 1. Start your computer and press F11 repeatedly during the startup process.

Step 2. If done correctly, you will enter the recovery environment.

Step 3. Select Troubleshoot > Recovery Manager.

Step 4. Click System Recovery.

System Recovery

Step 5. Proceed with on-screen instructions, backup data if needed.

Users using HP computers may find themselves unable to use the tool as shown above. This is because the Recovery Manager was discontinued in 2018 and the tool is no longer supported. Users are recommended to use Windows 10 File History to backup and restore files on their systems. There are also many third-party tools that can help with data recovery as we will introduce below.

The Best Alternative of HP Recovery Manager
