Data is as essential as money nowadays, sometimes even more valuable. Losing data is an unfortunate activity, and it happens to almost everyone at some point. Most of the time, losing data stored on your computer happens because of faulty hardware. If your life revolves around sensitive data, you need to back up your computer regularly.

Needless to say, there are countless backup options available for the users, but you need to find the one that suits you and is the easiest to understand. The kind of files you wish to backup also plays a significant role in choosing the backup type.

What kind of data should you backup?

So, what kind of data do you wish to backup? Operating systems, programs, and software can always be redownloaded and reinstalled; it's the personal data you need to keep safe. Some personal files and data are irreplaceable, and one can suffer a lot of loss if data isn't backed up.

One of the easiest and most convenient ways of securing yourself from data loss is making regular data backups on an external hard drive. After all, it can be tough getting beloved photos, videos, audios, and other personal data once lost.

Why should you back up on the external hard drive?

Before knowing how to backup your PC, you should know the importance of backing up your data to an external hard drive. Most people make a mistake and make a backup of the PC on some internal drive. In that case, a full system crash can result in you using all your sensitive and precious data.

There are a lot of other locations like CD/DVD, external hard drives, cloud storage, and online storage options for you to back up your PC.

Here is the list of features:

  • System Backup: Create an exact system image of a Windows PC that can instantly restore if the system crashes and cannot be recovered.
  • File Backup: If all you want is to backup files, then it can do that too. It ensures all important files are backup up regularly, and you can restore them in case of loss.
  • Partition Disk Backup: It's a unique feature that is not available for Windows. If you need to only backup a drive or portion, then you can do that too.
  • Disk clone/Partition clone/System clone: This allows you to replicate the same setup across multiple PCs, making it suitable for professional use.

Overall, EaseUS Todo backup offers all one backup solution of every type. Restoring is also very easy, and all you need is to give it an old backup, and your PC will be ready!

Step 1. For the first time you use EaseUS Todo Backup to back up files, click Create backup on the home screen and then mouse click the big question mark to select backup contents.

Step 5. EaseUS Todo Backup allows users to save the backup files to every device that is handy for you, like a local hard drive, external USB drive, SD card, network drive, or a NAS drive, plus a cloud drive of the EaseUS brand. We personally recommend users to choose the cloud drive prior to a pysical drive to save important backups due to the greater accessibility, flexibility and safety.

To be able to access to EaseUS cloud, all you need is an email registration and login.

Back up Computer to External Hard Drive with Windows Backup and Restore

Backup & Restore is a built-in feature in Windows that can take backup of all the files and user account on the computer. Make sure you have an external drive with enough space connected to the PC, and then follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open Run Prompt using Win key + R,  type control, and press the Enter key. In the Control Panel, navigate to System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.

Step 2: Click on Setup Backup, and then it will start the wizard, which will first ask you to select an external location. Please select it and click on the Next button.

select drive to save backup

Step 3: The backup wizard will ask if you want Windows to choose what to back up or you would want to choose manually. This can be changed later. I would suggest you choose the manual to use the extra option. Go to the next screen.

Manual Backup Windows

Step 4: Here, you can backup data files, drives, folders, and user accounts. You can customize it easily. Also, make sure to select the option—Include a System image of drives, i.e., EFI System Partition and Windows Recovery Environment. In the next screen, confirm the settings and save them.

Choose What you need to backup

Post this; the first backup will start, and make sure it is completed. Once done, you can further configure the backup method, change drive location, and even change what you plan to backup or add more locations, and so on.

Configure Backup Settings

If you have already created a backup, you can wait for the scheduled backup to happen, or you can manually create a backup by selecting the option Back Up Now. If you have made backups before, but want to make a new one instead of updating the old one, select the option Create new, full backup, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Bonus Tips: Create a System Image

While the Backup & Restore offers you to create a system image as well, but if you only want to have a system image, the option is available in the same location.

Backup using System Image

Step 1: Press the Start button and type Control. Click to launch the classic Control Panel when it appears in the search result. Change the view to  Small icons, and click on Backup and Restore.

Step 2: On the left side of the screen, locate and click on the option Create a system image. It will then ask where you would want to create the System Image.

Step 3:  You can choose between a computer, external drive, or network location. Once the wizard completes the process, a system image file will be available at the destination.

When creating a system image on an external hard disk, it must be formatted to be used in the NTFS file format.

You can keep different versions of the system image on the external hard drive. The older system images will be automatically deleted on both the internal and external devices when the drive starts running out of space.

Conclusion

Backing up your PC may sound complicated and tedious, but in reality, it's the simplest thing you can do to save your data from hardware failure and external attacks. While Windows offers a Backup & Restore feature but it is only half-baked. A backup system should be suitable enough for any backup, must offer an interface that is easy to use and easily restore to an earlier state.  Windows seems to be lacking in all these departments. All the backup tools are at different places, and it's tedious to learn each of them. All in all, we're glad to let you know EaseUS backup and recovery software here.
