Data and information are as important for an organization as blood in human body. In case data and information become unavailable due to any reason, all the working of the organization stops and it becomes unmanageable loss. In order to avoid such big loss, The IT administrators must take backup of their data frequently. There are two important types of backup.
A hot backup, also called a online backup, is a backup performed on data even though it is actively accessible to users and may currently be in a state of being updated. Hot backup can provide a convenient solution in multi-user systems, because they do not require downtime, as does a conventional cold backup.
A cold backup, also called an offline backup, is a database backup when the database is offline and thus not accessible for updating. This is the safest way to backup because it avoids the risk of copying data that may be in the process of being updated. However, a cold backup involves downtime because users cannot use the database while it is being backed up.
When system downtime must be minimized, a hot backup can provide an alternative to the cold backup. A hot backup can be done even as users access the database, but some method must be used to ensure that data being updated is noted and can be copied when the update is complete.
Hot backup is an online backup which can backup your data without interrupting your work via copy-on-write mechanism, especially backup the database running in Archive log mode, it can perform point-in-time recovery.
